Gunfire in Kinshasa

Blogger congogirl has been hearing gunfire and also apparently rocket launchers and writing about her experience in the Congo. The BBC and CNN both have brief stories, suggesting that Kabila may no longer have control. On the other hand, it seems wrong for Bemba to get a share of the government simply by using thugs to terrorize the capital.

Update (4:33 AM): Although I am truly frightened for them all, the crisis has made me aware of two other bloggers doing good things in Kinshasha - Kate and Fred. Just in case you want to hear what it sounds like to be in the midst of gunfire, Fred has posted an mp3. The BBC is now saying that Bemba has taken refuge in the South African embassy.

Good on you for keeping an eye on events in the Congo as well as out-fact-checking John McPhee and the New Yorker!

I actually have not checked McPhee's text yet. The chalk issue probably depends upon what one includes in the "eastern" United States.
